Label: THE USED
"I'm gonna make you pay just for making me cry" goes "Cry," far and away the best track The Used have recorded in years. It's funky, with Prince-ly guitar and surprising melodic contortions worthy of better than its prototypically melodramatic lyrics. Maybe the band's boredom with its own formula was the key -- for this sixth album they recorded the vocals first and built the music around them to snugly fit in fully realized melodies. And moments like the bridge to "El-Oh-Vee-Ee" or the concrete-wall verses of "A Song to Stifle Imperial Progression" display the same offbeat invention as well.
