Surprise! At 73, Pharoah Sanders isn’t only one of the last first-generation free-jazz cats still standing, he can still overblow on his sax to beat the band. That’s especially impressive, given that an experimental jazz group in the 2010s is apt to host an amplified synthesizer, as trumpeter Rob Mazurek’s does. The bandleader’s compositions alternate between states of swinging and being spaced-out, and are worth hearing. Though if you want some of Pharoah’s high heat, go straight to “Spiral Mercury” (the sax solo hits just before the 3-minute mark), “Blue Sparks from Her” and “Jagoda’s Dream.”
