Glory And Gore
Label: Universal Music New Zealand Limited
This teenaged New Zealander's rise from total obscurity to the top of the charts garnered a lot of attention. But what her debut makes clear is that the surprises up Lorde's sleeves don't end there: She also managed to infiltrate the pop charts with a contemplative indie sound weighted with a gravity beyond her 16 years. With its echoing electro-pop, melancholic melodies, ennui-ridden vocals and savvy social commentary, Heroine is thought-provoking. It's also very listenable, especially when she experiments (see the bluesy opening to "Team" or mermaid girl group sound of "White Teeth Teens").
