Flesh without Blood
On Claire Boucher's fourth album, the ghostly melodies that lithely flitted across her dense, playful soundscapes go pop-star supernova. Art Angels is a luminous smear of sticky synth pop and warm, blissful dance tracks. "Belly of the Beat" is a dreamy love letter to the floor while "Art Angels" and "Easily" are watery echoes of late-'90s Madonna. Elsewhere, thrashing interruptions like the addictive "Scream," built around a sour, stabbing riff and a cascade of verses from Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes, wake up the dream pop before knocking it out again.
