Forever and a Day
Label: ESGN / EMPIRE
Listeners who discovered Freddie Gibbs on last year’s acclaimed Piñata collaboration with Madlib will encounter an entirely different sound on Shadow of a Doubt. Unlike Piñata, which stuck to sampled beat loops, Shadow returns Gangsta Gibbs to the murky and deliberately sluggish soundtracks that are more typical of his work. “Rearview Mirror” takes inspiration from 2Pac’s “All Eyez on Me,” while Gibbs executes a bounce rap on “Careless.” Tracks like “Narcos” and “F*ckin’ Up the Count” reveal an artist comfortable in spitting grizzled gun talk.
