Ske-dat-de-dat: The Spirit of Satch
Label: The Last Music Company
Dr. John has explored everything from psychedelia to gritty funk to modern rock (for the last, see 2012's excellent Locked Down). Yet he always returns to his roots in New Orleans jazz and R&B, which is what he does on Ske-Dat-De-Dat: The Spirit of Satch, his tribute to the great Louis Armstrong. Since this is the Doctor we're talking about (a musical chameleon if there ever was one), don't expect faithful renditions, but rather imaginative re-workings that incorporate elements of hip-hop ("Mack the Knife"), Cuban jazz ("Tight Like This") and Southern soul ("Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams").
