Label: Chrisette Michele, LLC
Chrisette Michele may be known for her neo-soul songs with jazzy Billie Holiday tones. However, her biggest smashes have been songs with rappers such as Jay Z (“Lost One”) and Rick Ross (“Aston Martin Music”). Her new Milestone sounds in tune with those urban pop hits, and may be her most contemporary album to date. On “Steady” she riffs and “flicks her wrist” over a trap beat. She reunites with Rick Ross on “Equal,” and she naturally modulates her voice on “Diamond Letter” to make it sound like it’s been filtered through Auto-Tune technology. For “To the Moon,” she bellows as if she were lifting herself into the sky. Milestone is a showcase for Michele as a dynamic performer, and someone whose quirky “Indy Girl” sensibility elevates these songs above the norm.
