Take a Little Pill
Label: Warner Records
Though Clark has been billed as a bearer of change in mainstream country, this debut is bookended by songs about the tragic things that never seem to change. In between, some characters use romance to cope (see pre-affair contemplation "What Will Keep Me Out of Heaven," where salvation is just a sin away, and "Stripes," which suggests "thou shalt not kill" only applies if thou shalt look bad in prison garb), but those more experienced have found a more reliable fix -- namely, booze, weed and pills. Country music can be equally addictive, and that's never truer than when it's as good as this.
