Jack Antonoff updates an old trick: admitting his imperfections over perfect music. He injects vintage '80s arena synth-pop with the coliseum-sized echoes and pounding, Queen-like rhythm section of his main band Fun. As such, he blows up modest murmurings like "I can't believe I captured your heart" and "I wanna get better" to full underdog anthems suitable for a teen movie trailer, while still retaining catchy miniature riffs and inner-ear tickles like the slap bass adorning a ballad such as "Reckless Love." By comparison, Depeche Mode sound as minimal as Young Marble Giants.
